Abbey Crescent occupies the site of the former Palm Court Hotel, which sits behind the main road running along Torquay’s waterfront. Its location makes it a key gateway site coming in from the west, (Brixham / Paignton) and one the Council were keen to see developed. Previously consent had been granted for a replacement hotel, but that had become commercially unrealistic and undeliverable.
Working closely with the Mansell Partnership Housing South West team in Exeter, we agreed a construction finance package between them and the developer, Havard Tisdale (www.havardtisdale.co.uk).
This allowed HT to acquire the site from the administrator and then pursue an imaginative and exciting solution in partnership with local award winning architects, Kay Elliott, to create a number of elevated restaurants facing the sea with 14 luxury holiday apartments and 14 high value apartments/penthouses above.
This important regeneration project will not only improve the urban fabric of this area, but also provide employment in the restaurants (some of which will attract national brands) and through the management and letting of the holiday apartments.
